Improve your English by Listening to music and singing

Are you a music lover?

If so, this article is made for you. Imagine you are from a non-English speaking country but you are a huge fun of Coldplay, Bob Marley or Lana del Rey, like me. However, when you listen to their music you don’t really understand what they are singing about because they sing in English. The only thing you manage to do is simply hum a few parts of the song. But wouldn’t it be amazing to be able to not only understand them but also to sing in English at the same time? Let me tell you that it is not impossible, you just need to practice a bit, and after that it will come by itself!

As well as reading books or watching movies, listening to music in a foreign language is the best activity to improve your level while having a great time. Furthermore, it is scientifically proven that it is easier to improve your listening skills, your pronunciation and learn new vocabulary through music. The melody helps you retain concepts, and the language used in the songs is usually aimed at the local people, so you learn updated language and colloquial expressions. In addition, you would be doing an activity that’s good for both the mind and the emotions, making you feel sensations of all kinds. If you haven’t done it before, check out the following tips to start doing it properly.

First of all, select a song that you like, and listen carefully to it. Try to understand and to identify some words and expressions paying attention mostly to the chorus, which is the part that would be repeated a few times. This repetition is the key to learning a new language and to help you memorise new vocabulary. It is normal that if you just listen to a song just once you won’t remember it. You need to listen the same song a few times, until you get used to it.

Secondly, try to sing the song. While you are listening to the song a few times, try to sing it without reading the lyrics. This is going to help you to have the correct pronunciation of the words. Repeat, repeat and repeat. Additionally, a good exercise would be trying to write the song while you are listening to it.

Now is time to search for the lyrics. You can find them on Google; just type ‘lyrics of’ followed by the name of the song, and pay full attention while reading it. Check it word by word, analysing which words you got right and which ones you got wrong to help you remember them

Finally, it is time to read the lyrics while you listen to the music. Above all, don’t forget to enjoy!

Play and learn

Moreover, there is a very nice and useful website that you will love if you want to keep improving your English level by listening to music. I am talking about Lyrics Training, a page which allows you to sing your favorite songs just as you would at karaoke. The game is structured by levels of English and there are different exercises to practice your pronunciation, reading, writing, reading and comprehension. I invite you to try it!

A few suggestions

If you don’t know where to start, let me suggest you a few songs. Let’s go!

Hello – Adele

[Verse 1]

Hello, it’s me

I was wondering if after all these years you’d like to meet

To go over everything

They say that time’s supposed to heal ya, but I ain’t done much healing

Hello, can you hear me?

I’m in California dreaming about who we used to be

When we were younger and free

I’ve forgotten how it felt before the world fell at our feet

There’s such a difference between us

And a million miles

[Chorus]

Hello from the other side

I must’ve called a thousand times

To tell you I’m sorry

For everything that I’ve done

But when I call, you never seem to be home

Hello from the outside

At least I can say that I’ve tried

To tell you I’m sorry, for breaking your heart

But it don’t matter

It clearly doesn’t tear you apart anymore

[Verse 2]

Hello, how are you?

It’s so typical of me to talk about myself, I’m sorry

I hope that you’re well

Did you ever make it out of that town where nothing ever happened?

It’s no secret that the both of us

Are running out of time

[Chorus]

So hello from the other side

I must’ve called a thousand times

To tell you I’m sorry

For everything that I’ve done

But when I call, you never seem to be home

Hello from the outside

At least I can say that I’ve tried

To tell you I’m sorry, for breaking your heart

But it don’t matter

It clearly doesn’t tear you apart anymore

[Bridge]

(Highs, highs, highs, highs, lows, lows, lows, lows)

Ooh, anymore

(Highs, highs, highs, highs, lows, lows, lows, lows)

Ooh, anymore

(Highs, highs, highs, highs, lows, lows, lows, lows)

Ooh, anymore

(Highs, highs, highs, highs, lows, lows, lows, lows)

Anymore

[Chorus]

Hello from the other side

I must’ve called a thousand times

To tell you I’m sorry

For everything that I’ve done

But when I call, you never seem to be home

Hello from the outside

At least I can say that I’ve tried

To tell you I’m sorry, for breaking your heart

But it don’t matter

It clearly doesn’t tear you apart anymore

Coldplay – The speed of sound

[Verse 1]

How long before I get in?

Before it starts, before I begin?

How long before you decide?

Before I know what it feels like?

Where to, where do I go?

If you never try, then you’ll never know

How long do I have to climb

Up on the side of this mountain of mine?

[Verse 2]

Look up, I look up at night

Planets are moving at the speed of light

Climb up, up in the trees

Every chance that you get

Is a chance you seize

How long am I gonna stand

With my head stuck under the sand?

I’ll start before I can stop

Before I see things the right way up

[Hook]

All that noise, and all that sound

All those places I got found

And birds go flying at the speed of sound

To show you how it all began

Birds came flying from the underground

If you could see it then you’d understand

[Verse 3]

Ideas that you’ll never find

All the inventors could never design

The buildings that you put up

Japan and China all lit up

The sign that I couldn’t read

Or a light that I couldn’t see

Some things you have to believe

But others are puzzles, puzzling me

[Hook]

All that noise, and all that sound

All those places I got found

And birds go flying at the speed of sound

To show you how it all began

Birds came flying from the underground

If you could see it then you’d understand

Ah when you see it then you’ll understand

[Bridge]

All those signs, I knew what they meant

Some things you can invent

Some get made, and some get sent

[Hook]

Birds go flying at the speed of sound

To show you how it all began

Birds came flying from the underground

If you could see it then you’d understand

Ah, when you see it then you’ll understand
