Studying abroad is the fastest way to learn a new language. Being surrounded by native speakers as well as taking classes are fundamental to achieve higher level in the new language. The question is how to testify your English skills in a way that allow you to be recognized for all the efforts made?

There are many possibilities. However, today we are going to talk about taking an English exam. At NED Training Centre, we offer to our students the opportunity to test their knowledge at the end of their courses. There are two different types of exams available: Cambridge and TIE, depending on the level achieved by each student at the end of their courses.
Cambridge exams are destined to students from Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advanced English students are required to take a Cambridge Exam at the end of their courses, whereas TIE exam is designed for Elementary and Pre-Intermediate English students.

What is TIE?

The Test of Interactive English (TIE) is an international EFL exam developed in Ireland by a group of Irish English language professionals under the aegis of the Advisory Council for English Language Schools (ACELS), a government agency which was responsible at that time for quality assurance in English language teaching. TIE can be taken by junior and adult students on either short or long courses in Ireland as well as abroad.

Who can take TIE?

As said previously, all the students that attended our English courses from the Elementary to the Pre-Intermediate level are qualified to take TIE exam. However, any student above 18 years old who wishes to testify their English level are qualified for the exam.

Why should I take TIE?

Although TIE exam was designed in Ireland, it has become internationally recognised. This means that many other countries in Europe accept TIE exam as a test of your English Proficiency, when trying to apply for a Third Level Education. Furthermore, the exam was designed to evaluate four English skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking in very interactive way.

How does it work?

Differently from many other English tests, TIE is a task-based exam with the content chosen by each individual learner beforehand where the student needs to go through three pre-specified tasks: carry out an investigation, read a book in English compatible with their level, and follow a News Story. Once done it, the candidate needs to keep a logbook with the records of their work and bring it to the test day. Candidates are required to produce their logbook in the oral test.

How long does it last?

The exam take place on the last Thursday of every month and it is divided into two parts, the Oral Test (30 minutes per 2 candidates) and the Written Test (60 minutes). All the elements of both parts are compulsory.

What are the subjects mention on the tasks?

Because TIE was designed to build upon learners’ background knowledge and provide useful tool for the learn development, all tasks consist of familiar subjects from the English language classroom and their daily lives.

How much does it cost?

The cost of the test for 2017 is €130. Fees must be paid when applying. Our students have already their fees fully paid as they book their courses at NED Training Centre.

Do I have any help to take the test?

Yes. IELT – Interactive English Language Tests Ltd is the entity responsible for managing of TIE exam. On its homepage http://ielt.ie/ is possible to download several handbooks to help you to better understand how the exam works as well as templates for the three pre-specified tasks. At NED Training Centre, our Student Office Department offers all the support and information that our students need previously to achieve the best results as possible.
